On April 19, 1975, India successfully launched its own satellite, Aryabhata, into orbit, making it the sixth nation in the world to do so. This accomplishment showed India's burgeoning technological strength on the world stage and represented an important turning point in the country's space programme. Aryabhata was given that name in honour of the fifth-century AD Indian mathematician and astronomer. Solar cells provided Aryabhata with its power, recharging its batteries throughout the day so that it could function through the night. A radio transmitter was used to send data from the satellite to ground stations in the Soviet Union and India.

Chandrayaan-1, India's first lunar mission, was launched successfully in 2008 and found evidence of water on the moon's surface. India became the first nation in the world to successfully orbit Mars after launching its Mars Orbiter Mission in 2014.
