Meghalaya new state of India, 2 April 1970

Meghalaya is a state in Northeast India that borders Bangladesh. Prior to 1972, Meghalaya was a part of the state of Assam. Announcement of Meghalaya autonomous was done on 2 April 1970. However, on January 21, 1972, Meghalaya became an autonomous state within the Indian state of Assam.

The creation of Meghalaya as an autonomous state was the result of years of political struggle by the tribal communities of the region. These communities had been demanding autonomy for decades, as they felt that their distinct identities and cultures were not being adequately represented within the larger state of Assam.

The formal process of creating Meghalaya as an autonomous state began in 1969, when the government of India appointed a commission to study the feasibility of creating a separate state for the tribal communities of the region. The commission recommended the creation of a separate state, and Meghalaya was officially established on January 21, 1972, with Shillong as its capital.

Since then, Meghalaya has developed significantly and has made several notable contributions to the cultural and economic landscape of India. The state is known for its natural beauty, with stunning landscapes that include rolling hills, lush forests, and picturesque waterfalls. It is also home to a vibrant tribal culture, with many communities preserving their unique customs, festivals, and religious practices.

Today, Meghalaya is a thriving state with a diverse economy that includes agriculture, forestry, and tourism. The state government has worked hard to promote economic development and job creation, and Meghalaya has become one of the leading states in India in terms of human development indicators.

In conclusion, the creation of Meghalaya as an autonomous state within the larger state of Assam was a significant moment in India's political history. The decision to establish the state was driven by the aspirations of the tribal communities of the region, and since then, Meghalaya has become a thriving state with a rich cultural heritage and a rapidly growing economy.
