World War II in Europe came to a conclusion on May 8, 1945, marking one of the worst wars in recorded history. It had been nearly six years since Nazi Germany's invasion of Poland launched a world war that would result in the deaths of an estimated 70 million people.
Since 1939, the Allies, which included the United States, the Soviet Union, and Great Britain, had been waging war in Europe in an effort to expel Nazi Germany and put an end to its ruthless rule. Forced labour, concentration camps, and systematic murder were only a few of the Nazis' genocidal tactics used against Jews and other minority groups.
The Allies' overwhelming military power, the Nazis' waning resolve, and the invasion of Germany itself all contributed to the end of the European War. German General Alfred Jodl signed the unconditional surrender of all German forces on May 8, 1945, bringing an end to the European War.
People celebrated the end of a war that had claimed so many lives and left so much devastation in its wake as the news was received with joy and relief around the world. Winston Churchill announced the triumph in the streets of London, drawing huge crowds, while in New York City, the sidewalks were covered with ticker tape in jubilation.
As the Allies started to reconstruct and reorganise Europe in the wake of the conflict, the end of the European war signalled the start of a new era in world politics. As the Soviet Union grew in power, tensions between the USSR and the Allies increased, eventually igniting the Cold War.
But on May 8, 1945, everyone in the world gathered to commemorate the end of a protracted and brutal war. Although the sacrifices of those who fought and perished in the war would never be forgotten, the end of the war in Europe signalled a fresh start and the opportunity to move forward towards a more peaceful future.
