During the protest, Lajpat Rai was severely beaten by police officers, which led to his death a few weeks later. Bhagat Singh, who was a close associate of Lajpat Rai, was deeply disturbed by his death and vowed to avenge him.
On December 17, 1928, Bhagat Singh, along with Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar, planned to carry out an assassination attempt on the superintendent of police, James A. Scott, who was responsible for Lajpat Rai's death. However, they mistook John P. Saunders, a junior police officer, for Scott and shot him dead.

After a prolonged trial, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru were sentenced to death by hanging. Despite widespread protests and appeals for mercy, the British colonial government executed the three freedom fighters on March 23, 1931, at the Lahore Central Jail.
Despite their conviction, Bhagat Singh and his comrades continued to inspire many Indians in their fight for independence. Their story became a symbol of resistance against British colonialism, and their sacrifice inspired many other Indians to take up the cause of independence.
