Gangubai Hangal was born on March 5, 1913, in Dharwad, Karnataka, India, and belonged to a family of musicians. Her mother, Ambabai, was a Carnatic musician, and her father, Chikkurao Nadiger, was a lawyer and a musician.
She started learning music at a young age and received training in Hindustani classical music from several noted teachers, including Krishnacharya Hulgur, Sawai Gandharva, and Bhurji Khan.
Gangubai Hangal went on to become one of the most prominent representatives of the Kirana gharana, a style of Hindustani classical music known for its emphasis on melody and intricate ornamentation.
She performed extensively both in India and abroad, earning accolades and recognition for her contributions to Indian classical music. She received numerous awards, including the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.
Gangubai Hangal was also a social activist and was actively involved in the Indian independence movement. She continued to champion social causes throughout her life, including the promotion of education for girls and the empowerment of women.
In addition to her musical career, Gangubai Hangal was also a teacher and mentor to several students, many of whom went on to become successful musicians in their own right.
She passed away on July 21, 2009, leaving
behind a rich legacy and inspiring generations of musicians and music lovers.
