Bangkok, Thailand's capital, was founded on April 21, 1782, thanks to a historic occurrence. King Rama I of the Chakri dynasty, who ruled from 1782 to 1809, founded the city, also known as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon in Thai. The establishment of Bangkok was an important turning point in Thai history since it heralded the start of a new era and significantly influenced the country's cultural and economic environment.
Ayutthaya, an ancient city, presided over Thailand for more than 400 years before Bangkok was declared the country's capital. However, the Burmese army invaded and overran Ayutthaya in 1767, which caused the monarchy to fall. After this incident, a number of Thai kings tried to form new kingdoms, but none of them were able to regain control and national unity.
The former king Taksin was successfully overthrown in 1782 by General Chao Phraya Chakri, who would go on to become King Rama I. Thonburi, which is situated on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, was chosen as the new capital. King Rama I, however, thought that Thonburi was an unsuitable location for the capital city because to its susceptibility to outside invasions and its constrained potential for growth.
As a result, King Rama I commanded the creation of a new capital city that was more secure and had more room for expansion on the east bank of the Chao Phraya River. The name of the new city, Krung Thep, which translates to "City of Angels," was eventually changed to "Big City of Angels," Krung Thep Maha Nakhon.
Bangkok's construction required the labour of thousands of labourers over the course of several years. Temples, palaces, and other significant sites were constructed in the city's particular Thai style in order to reflect traditional Thai architecture and culture. With a system of canals and rivers that eased the movement of people and commodities around the city, the city was also planned to be a hub of trade and commerce.
Bangkok expanded in size and significance over time, turning into Thailand's centre of political, cultural, and economic activity. With a population of more than 8 million, it is currently one of Southeast Asia's most populated cities.
